Kumaratunge outlines UPFA policy to business leaders

Sri Lanka's President Ms Chandrika Kumaratunge expressed confidence that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) would enter into democratic political process under the future United Peoples' Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government when she met leaders of business communities including members of legal and medical profession at the Presidential House Friday evening, sources said.

She further outlined the broad policies and the programs planned for implementation by a UPFA led government.

"The UPFA government would convert the new parliament into a constituent assembly to draft a new Sri Lanka constitution which would uphold human rights and democracy. The new constitution would be passed with a simple majority," she said.

The Executive Presidency system would be abolished and a new electoral system would be introduced vesting with more powers to parliament, she said.

She appealed to the participants to extend full support to the new UPFA government that would be elected in the forthcoming general election to usher a new era ensuring prosperity for Sri Lanka's citizens and bright future for future generations.

Ms. Kumaratunge said the new changes the new UPFA government would introduce include new economic order, good governance, ensuring law and order, negotiating for durable peace with dignity, and key policies for education, health, women and children.
