64,000 police officers to provide election security- IGP

Close to sixty thousand police officers would be deployed to strengthen the security in all parts of Sri Lanka with the objective of ensuring free and fair elections, said the Inspector General of Police Mr.Indra de Silva addressing a press conference Friday.

About twenty thousand police personnel would be assigned to provide protection to candidates contesting in the northeast province, he added.

Approximately 21 thousand police personnel would be deployed to provide security to polling stations through out the island on the polling day which has been fixed for April 02 .

The service of home guards would also be enlisted for election work, added Mr.Indra de Silva.

Protection to the President and Prime Minister would be strengthened during election period , Mr.Indra de Silva said.
