East campus to open amid security complaints

Second semester examinations at the Eastern University campus are to be held on 15, April and the students should to return to their halls of residences on 6 April, informed A.D.Harris, University Registrar, sources in Batticaloa said. However, non-Batticaloa Tamil students who returned to their home districts after threatened with violence said that they have not been given any security guarantees and will not be able to return to the campus.
Tamil students from Jaffna, Vanni and Trincomalee districts said that they left the campus after many of them were threatened at gun point to leave. The campus authorities have not yet given any firm assurances for their safety when they return back to the campus, affected student sources said. Eastern University professors and lecturers from Jaffna and other districts also have not returned to the Eastern University campus fearing threat to their lives, said sources. Meanwhile, the Eastern University Registrar has further said that the Botany exams for the special degree is to be held on the 25th of March and that the Diploma examinations for the Child development and PreSchool studies will take place on Saturday, 20th March, according to campus sources. The Registrar further said classes for the Preschool education certificate will begin on Sunday, 21 March and that allo other activities will take place as normal.
