Sinnathurai from Kiran, 28 km north of Batticaloa town, who became an informant of the Sri Lanka Army's (SLA) after a dispute with his neighbours is taking revenge on his antagonists by identifying them as supporters of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), said sources in Batticaloa.
Sinnathurai, surrendered to the SLA three months ago at the Thuraiyadi camp which is close to Kiran, and near the causeway over the Batticaloa lagoon leading to the vast Vadamunai area to the west which is not under SLA control. On March 13, Sinnathurai identified S. Mohanarasa (36), as an LTTE informant. The SLA arrested Mohanarasa and detained at the Paper Factory Camp till the evening of March 17. Another person, Peethambaram, a farmer, coming from his farm in cart with his seven year old daughter was also identified by Sinnathurai as a supporter of the LTTE. As Peethambaram was being beaten up by the SLA, the little girl had run towards her father. At that moment, the gun of a soldier assaulting Peethambaram misfired and the bullet pierced the child' hip, wounding her seriously. On March 11 Chellathurai Karunanithi (24) from Kiran was caught at Thuraiyadi checkpoint on information given by Sinnathurai and severely assaulted before being released on March 15 (Chellathurai's father was shot dead by the SLA in 1990). People of Kiran say that they are terrified of Sinnathurai's activities.
