"Election will be a turning point in Tamil struggle"- LTTE official

Kumburupiddy area political head of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Mr.M.Sivakumar, Sunday addressing an election seminar in support of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) in the Trincomalee district said that the forthcoming general election would be a turning point in the Tamil freedom struggle.

The Trincomalee zonal branch of the Ceylon Tamil Teachers Union (CTTU) organised the seminar, which was held in the Trincomalee Town Hall.

Mr.C.Mathialagan, President of the zonal branch presided.

Mr.Sivakumar further said that if not for the military might of the LTTE Sri Lanka government would not have come to sign a ceasefire agreement with the LTTE and commence peace talks accepting LTTE as the sole representative of Tamils.

President Ms Chandrika Kumaratunge thought that the LTTE would renew its war once again with the take over of three key ministries, Defense, Interior and Media from the United National Front government. But LTTE d0cided to wait to recommence peace talks until both major political parties resolved their crisis, Mr.Sivakumar said.

"Our national leader has been saying that liberation struggle could take different paths but the goal will remain the same; to make Tamils live in their traditional homeland ensuring their security and with powers devolved at the northeast level to rehabilitate and develop the war-torn province," said Mr.Sivakumar.

TNA lead candidate contesting the Trincomalee district Mr.R.Sampanthan and other candidates also spoke.
