Thampalakamam residents march in support of TNA

Hundreds of villagers including women and children participated in a four km procession in Thampalakamam, Sunday afternoon carrying photographs of the LTTE national leader Mr.Velupillai Pirapaharan and shouting slogans in support of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) candidates, sources said.

Thampalakamam is a traditional Tamil village located about 27 km southwest of the east port town on the Trincomalee-Kandy highway. The procession which some Tamil activists referred to as mini-Pongu Thamil event (Tamil Resurgence) was organized by the people of Thampalakamam in connection with an election rally held Sunday evening in the village grounds. The procession including hundreds of bicycles, motorbikes, two wheel and four wheel tractors carrying men and women commenced around 3 p.m. from Hindu Temple at Puddukudiruppu in Thampalakamam. Former parliamentarians and presently contesting the general election in the Trincomalee district on TNA ticket Mr.R.Sampanthan and Mr.K.Thurairatnasingham along with other candidates went with the procession to the venue of the meeting. The procession went through Paddimedu, Koodampuli, Puddukudiruppu and Nayanmarthidal in the Thampalakamam village. Mr.Sampanthan, Mr.Thurairatnesingham and other TNA candidates and LTTE Thampalakamam LTTE political head Mr. Thirumalai spoke at the meeting.
