Posters, leaflets against Karuna Group in Batticaloa

Posters criticising the Karuna Group appeared in many parts of Batticaloa Monday. Several leaflets urging people in the troubled eastern district not to provide any form of assistance to the group led by renegade LTTE commander, Mr. Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan, were also distributed in Batticaloa town and its outskirts Sunday night.

Police and civil society sources in Batticaloa said Monday that a large number Liberation Tigers are now active in many parts of the eastern district and are behind the posters and leaflets.

"Although it is very obvious now their numbers are rapidly increasing by the day, there is no indication so far that the Tigers will trigger clashes with the Karuna Group now", a well informed Catholic priest in the east said.
