The Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation's (TELO) camp in Araipattai (Aaraiyampathy), 7 kilometers south of Batticaloa, was attacked this morning around 9.30 a.m. by two unidentified youths, suspected to be members of the Liberation Tigers.
The armed body guard of Robert alias Navaratnarajah, the local TELO leader, was wounded when a grenade lobbed by the attackers who had come on bicycles exploded in the premises of the camp. Police sources in Batticaloa said that Robert had been in the camp at the time of the attack but had escaped unhurt. The attackers had abandoned their bicycles and made good their escape before the Special Task Force commandos could arrive at the scene. The bicycles had been found fitted with high explosives, said police sources. TELO operates as a paramilitary group with the Sri Lankan army and the STF. The Tigers have attacked the TELO camp in Aaraipatthai on several occasions and the camp was fortified recently. Last month a senior TELO cadre who was incharge of the Aaraipatthai TELO camp was shot dead by suspected members of the LTTE.
