The Batticalo Magistrate, Mr. H.H.M. Ajmeer, on Wednesday ordered further remand until April 27 to the four cadres of the renegade Karuna group who were arrested by Sri Lanka police on March 31 with weapons on the Kalmunai-Batticaloa road, sources in Batticaloa said.
The four cadres, Kanapathipillai Mahendran alias Satchi Master, Samithamby Rajan alias Mayuran, Velaapody Varathakumar alias Manohar, Arasamany Subaraj alias Kuberan, were arrested by the Kaathaankudy Police near the technical college in Manchanthoduwai. The group was said to be responsible for several killings and thefts, and at the time of being arrested was said to be taking dangerous weapons, black cloths and wires to abduct residents considered not loyal to the Karuna group. Residents of Batticaloa told TamilNet that 'Satchi Master' was one of the leaders of the Karuna group that ordered the people from the North to leave Batticaloa.
