The Sri Lankan Army (SLA) conducted a cordon and search at Paashaiyoor near Jaffna town in the morning between 9.00 and 12.00 a.m. yesterday, allegedly to ascertain whether those residents who were neither employed or studying, had any connections with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), said sources in Jaffna.
The timing of the operation was such that the employed - the majority of whom are fishermen - and children who are schooling, would be absent from home. Most of those rounded up were either small children or women, said sources. No arrests were made. Meanwhile The Voice of Tigers said this morning that two Liberation Tigers, Ltd. Sindujan (Selvarajah Jeyaraj of Jaffna) and Cpt. Thuvarakan (Ratnasingham Suresh) died in a fire fight with the Sri Lankan army at Pashaiyoor in Jaffna town on Monday, March 23. The radio said that Eelavrasan (Kanagarathinam Raveendran of Jaffna) died in a confrontation with the SLA yesterday in Kilinochchi and another LTTE fighter, Seelan (Mahalingam Dushyanthan of Jaffna), died in a battle with the SLA troops near Mankulam on Monday.
