LTTE releases Sinhalese worker arrested with T-56

The Tamil Eelam Police Service (TEPS) has released a Sinhalese contract worker arrested last year for carrying a concealed T-56 rifle in Paranthan to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), sources said.

The worker, Mr. Sajith Hemantha of Matara, was arrested by the TEPS with a concealed T-56 in October 2003 in Paranthan, and was produced in Tamil Eelam courts in Kilinochchi, which remanded him pending inquiries.

His case was due for hearing in the courts, but on hearing the news through the ICRC that the suspect’s father had expired, the Liberation Tigers decided to release him on humanitarian grounds, sources said.
