Japanese peace envoy Akashi to visit Sri Lanka

Mr.Yasushi Akashi, special envoy of the Government of Japan is to pay a five-day visit to Sri Lanka commencing from Saturday 15th May to follow up his continued peace mission, said the Japanese Embassy in a press release Thursday.

The full text of the release follows: -

Mr.Yasushi Akashi, Representative of the Government of Japan will visit Sri Lanka from Saturday 15th May to Wednesday 19th May 2004, to follow up his continued mission.

This is his 7th visit to Sri Lanka since he was appointed as the Special Representative of the Government of Japan in October 2002 to contribute to the peace process in Sri Lanka and his first visit after the election of the UPFA government at the recently concluded General Elections.

During his visit this time he is also scheduled to meet Her Excellency President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and other relevant officials of Sri Lanka to discuss the current situation of the peace process. Continuing his mission to contribute to peace building, rehabilitation and reconstruction in Sri Lanka, Mr. Akashi will also visit Kilinochchi and meet with the representatives of LTTE.

Prior to his departure from Sri Lanka, Mr. Akashi will address a Press Conference at the Colombo Hilton Hotel at 1 p.m. on Wednesday 19th May, the release concluded.
