Elilan meets SLA's Trinco commander

Mr.S.Elilan, newly appointed political head of the Liberation Tigers in the Trincomalee district, met with the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Sri Lanka Army in the district, Major General Sunil Tennekon, Wednesday afternoon in the Trincomalee office of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Commission (SLMM), and discussed the ground situation in the district in detail, sources said.

The Senior Superintendent of Police in Trincomalee, Mr.Upali Hewage, SLA Brigadier M Zahir, and an officer of the Sri Lanka Navy were also associated with Maj. Gen. Tennekon in the discussion, which was facilitated by the SLMM, sources said. It was the first such meeting since Elilan was appointed as the political leader in Trincomalee, sources said. The discussion, which commenced at about 2 p.m., Wednesday, continued for about an hour. At the conclusion of the discussion, Maj. Gen. Tennekon told local journalists that the talks were constructive and meaningful. Both parties agreed to maintain the current cordial relationship between them. They agreed to work for the maintenance of law and order in the district without
any interruption. Mr.Elilan told journalists that talks were held in a cordial atmosphere and were useful.

He added he had brought to the notice of the SLN officer present in the discussion about the plight of Tamil fishermen living in Nilaveli and Kuchchaveli as they had been severely subjected to checks by the SLN personnel in the sea. Mr.Elilan said these fishermen had been asked to obtain passes to venture into the sea. The LTTE political leader said the SLN official had promised to look into the problem.
