NorthEast observes day of mourning, hartal for Nadesan

Areas of NorthEast from Point Pedro to Amparai observed a day of mourning and general shut down (hartal) Wednesday to protest against the killing of a leading Tamil journalist Mr. Iyathurai Nadesan, media sources said.

In Jaffna district shops were closed down and public transport service came to a standstill responding to the appeal made by the Jaffna district
journalist Associations and public organizations. In Batticaloa and Amparai districts shops were closed down and transport
services were reduced to a minimum. In Amparai medial persons including Tamils,
Muslim and Sinhalese held a protest demonstration condemning the killing of
Mr.Nadesan by unidentified gunmen. Meanwhile, large number of people paid their last respects to slain Tamil
journalist Mr.Nadesan Wednesday morning when his remains were kept in
Kilinochchi cultural hall, sources said. The hearse carrying remains of Mr.Nadesan Wednesday afternoon left
Killinochchi to Jaffna. Members of Jaffna funeral committee took charge of
the casket to be taken to Jaffna through Muhamalai army checkpoint, sources
said.
