VC fails to end Jaffna varsity employees' strike

Vice Chancellor (VC) of Jaffna Campus, Professor C.Mohanadas, Monday failed in his attempt to bring the eight-day-old strike of the Jaffna University Employees Union to an end. Jaffna University Students Union issued a statement the same day that they will stage a one-day token strike Tuesday to exert pressure on the administration to find an early solution to employees' strike
so that education of students is not adversely affected, sources said.
Hundreds of varsity employees began their strike on June 14th Monday demanding that they should be paid salary arrears and action should be
taken steps to stop corruption in the varsity administration, sources said. In the meantime, Vice Chancellor Professor Mohanadas on his return from Trincomalee Monday held discussions with Varsity Teachers Union representatives and heads of all faculties. Later in the evening he met with the representatives of Varsity Students' Union. His attempts failed to bring about an amicable settlement
between the striking employees union and varsity administration, sources said. Varsity sources further said the Vice Chancellor would continue his
discussion with relevant parties to bring a solution to the strike that has badly affected the education and also has delayed holding examinations, sources said.
