Jaffna wins crown in first NorthEast athletic meet

Jaffna district emerged champions in the first Thamileelam Junior Track and Field meet held in Jaffna during the weekend. Trincomalee district became the runners-up and the third place went to Mannar district. However the Trincomalee
district bagged the highest gold medals with 19, Jaffna district 15, Amparai 09, Kilinochchi 07, Mannar and Mullaitivu 5 each, Vavuniya 6 and Batticaloa 3, sources said.

In overall placings, Jaffna district obtained 149 points, Trincomalee district got 118 points, Mannar collected 71 points,
Amparai 63, Killinochchi- 56, Vavuniya 48, Batticaloa 48 and Mullaitivu 32. Mr.A.T.M.Harris of Trincomalee district won gold medals in 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, 4x100 m and 4x00 m relay events and was adjudged best athlete under 18. Ms Kalista Roshani of Trincomalee district was adjudged best athlete under 18 girls by winning gold in four events, 100 m, 200 m, high jump and 4x100m relay. Mr.M.S.M.Naleem of Trincomalee district was adjudged best athlete under 14 for boys and Ms K.Ushanthinie of Mannar District in girls', sources said. Under 16 boys and girls Mr.M.C.M.Risvie of Trincomalee district and Ms E.Vasuki of Jaffna district were adjudged best athlete respectively. Shields and cups were awarded to winners by the Jaffna district Government Agent Mr.S.Pathmanathan, Jaffna University Vice Chancellor Professor C.Mohanadas and Thamileelam Sports Division Head Mr.K.Paapa.
