No date fixed for parliamentary debate on ISGA

No date has been fixed for the proposed three day debate on the Interim Self Governing Authority (ISGA) proposal of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during the fourth session of the parliament which is scheduled to begin Tuesday amid confusion and controversy as the minority United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government is still struggling to secure parliamentary majority, political sources said.

Three-day debate proposed by the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) on the ISGA will not take place in parliament in the near future, as the ruling UPFA leaders did not show keen interest at the party leaders' meeting held in the parliamentary complex Monday morning with the Speaker Mr.W.J.M.Lokkubandara in the chair, the sources said.

At the last party leaders' meeting held on July, ruling party leader Mr.Jayaraj Fernandopulle wanted the three-day debate on ISGA should be fixed for July 23-25. The Tamil National Alliance opposed it and wanted the Speaker to put off the debate during the month of September.

However at Monday's party leaders meeting UPFA leaders did not insist for an early debate on the ISGA, the sources said.
