Police oppose granting bail to Gurunagar fishermen

The Jaffna Additional Magistrate Ms Srinithi Nandasekaran Wednesday put off the inquiry for Thursday, into the bail application filed on behalf of the four local fishermen who were arrested by Sri Lanka Police officers for allegedly transporting explosives last week, legal sources said. Police objected to the bail application and stated that they would be filing plaints against the suspects on the next date, according to sources.

Sri Lanka Police arrested the four fishermen last Tuesday early morning when they were returning to shore, legal sources said.

The bail application seeking the release of the four suspects now in remand came up for inquiry Wednesday.

All suspects are natives of Gurunagar, a fishing hamlet in the Jaffna town, sources said.

The police also objected to the release of the fishing boat, which the Police say the suspects used for transporting the explosives on the day of incident.

Police said the boat was a vital production in the case, legal sources said.

Further inquiry into the bail application was fixed for July 22, legal sources said.
