Jaffna mail slowed by strike

The strike by the Sri Lanka Postal Department has affected the delivery of mail in the Jaffna peninsula, said sources in the Postal Department in Jaffna town. The usual quota of mail sent via the domestic airline to Jaffna is six bags per day. But following the strike it has been reduced to a daily average of only two bags.

Though 110 bags a week sent to Jaffna by sea in normal times, only around 26 are being dispatched now, said sources.

This has severely affected the public in the peninsula, almost all of whom have relatives living outside Jaffna.

The Union of Postal and Telecommunication Officers (UPTO) are on a protest campaign since last week demanding better wages, overtime payment and other relief.
