SLMM-SLA meeting held in Vavuniya

Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission’s officials coordinating security met with the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army for the Vanni region, Maj. Gen. Sisira Wijesooriya, at the SLMM office in Vavuniya Friday, military sources said.
General Wijesooriya said that it was routine to meet SLMM officials coordinating security, and as the SLMM officials wanted to meet him, he met with them for about one and a half hours. Severeal SLA officers and SLMM officers participated at the meeting. When asked about his impending transfer, the Vanni SLA commander said that his transfer to the SLA headquarters in Colombo was to be effective August 15, but because of certain delays, it would become effective at the end of August. Meanwhile, the Ambassador of Singapore in Sri Lanka visited Vavuniya Friday and met with the Government Agent, Mr. K. Ganesh, to discuss the prevailing conditions in the city.
Mr. Jayalath Jayawardene, the United National Party’s former minister for rehabilitation and current member of parliament, was also present at the meeting. In response to questions about the status of the ceasefire and peace talks, the Ambassador said that the currently the country is reasonably peaceful, and every effort should be made by all concerned to take forward the peace process and achieve permanent peace.
