Ten cadres of the Liberation Tigers Tuesday afternoon climbed on the Batticaloa jail roof demanding that their case be expedited for their early release, Police said. The LTTE cadres, six males and four females, were arrested in July 2003 after Police found some ammunition in the vehicles in which they were traveling. The protesting LTTE cadres complained that others who were arrested with weapons were released because of their connections with army intelligence.
The LTTE cadres climbed the jail roof after they were produced in the Batticaloa court Tuesday. District courts and high courts cannot grant bail to persons arrested with dangerous weapons. Only the Court of Appeal can grant bail for persons arrested with dangerous weapons. Eight of the protesting Tigers were arrested on 15 July 2003 near Batticaloa. Two were arrested on 8 July 2003.
