New IGP to assume office

Inspector Chandra Fernando will assume duties as the 29th new Inspector General of Police (IGP) before 30 September if his nomination to the IGP post is approved by the Constitutional Council, security sources in Colombo said.

Outgoing police chief Indra De Silva's term of office expires end of September.

Mr. Fernando was recommended to the post by Sri Lanka's President Ms.Kumaratunge.

Mr.Fernando is expected to take the oath after Ms.Kumaratunge returns from U.S, according to political sources in Colombo.
