Indian de-miners hand over cleared land in Mannar

The people of this area were displaced fourteen years ago when Sri Lanka army and Police established camps amidst their settlements. ‘Horizon’ held a formal function in Vankalai Thursday to hand over the official land release documents of Suganthapuri to a senior official from the Mannar District Secretariat. The chairman of ‘Horizon’ Major Gen (Ret) S. G Pitre (Indian army) addressed the gathering and gave details of the de-mining operation carried out so far. UNDP provided technical assistance for the project. Brigadier (Ret) R. R Moorthy (Indian army), project manager welcomed guests. Horizon has clears 68000 square metres in the general area and has removed a number of UXOs too, a spokesman told TamilNet. Horizon presented a mural created on sheet metal to the parish priest of the Vankalai St. Ann’s church at the function.
