Residents and businesses in Vavuniya have been raising a stink over the smell of undisposed garbage accumulating for the last several days as Vavuniya Urban Council (UC) searched for an alternate site to dump the municipal district garbage, civil sources in Vavuniya said. Villagers from Rasendrakulam located 4km south of Vavuniya where the landfill is located had prevented the UC from dumping garbage in their village saying that large amount of garbage near residential area is polluting the environment.
Businesses and residents started burning the garbage in front of their houses and shops as the UC failed to remove them to the dumping ground at Rasendrakulam, sources said. Pampaimadu area, about six km off Vavuniya town on Mannar Vavuniya road, had been selected as the new dumping ground said UC Secretary Mr. M.S.Saravanapavan Tuesday. Jungles in Pampaimadu area has been cleared and road constructed at a cost of about three hundred thousand rupees enabling the UC labourers to transport the garbage collected in Vavuniya town, Mr.Saravanapan said. Residential areas in Pampaimadu village are located about three km off the site where garbage is dumped and the officials are confident that Pampaimadu villagers will not oppose the new site, civil sources said.
