Trinco to be upgraded to municipal council

Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government has appointed a two member committee to study and submits it recommendations regarding the proposal made to upgrade the Trincomalee Urban Council (UC) to a Municipal Council in the Town Gravets Divisional Secretariat Division at Trincomalee district in accordance with the Municipal Council Ordinance.

Mr.Gamini Rodrigo, Trincomalee Government Agent is the chairman of the committee and the other member is Ms.D.D.Wijialudchumi who is the North East provincial Commissioner of Local Government. She will also function as the Secretary of the committee, local government sources said.

The committee has sought members of the public and other civil organizations to submit their opinion in regard to the following in writing addressed to the Secretary: -

To determine the boundaries of the proposed Trincomalee Municipal Council after it’s established.

Details of limits of the existing Urban Council, which have been changed due to the establishment of new Municipal Council and Predesiya Sabah.

Details of administrative limits together with maps marked with the limit of the new Municipal Council and Predesiya Sabah.

Number of members to be in the Municipal Council of Trincomalee

Grama Sevaka Divisions (in their present name) which will belong to the new Municipal Council and Predesiya Sabah after upgrading of the Trincomalee Municipal Council.

Capability of the Municipal Council in performing a better service and its revenue and new tax proposals.

Verbal representations can also be made after obtaining a date and time from the Chairman or the Secretary of the Committee, the sources said.
