[TamilNet, Saturday, 13 November 2004, 13:52 GMT]
Jaffna District Fisheries Societies Federation (JDFSF) Saturday said
hundreds of fishermen residing in coastal areas of Chullipuram would lose their profession following the construction of training centre along shore by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) violating the ceasefire agreement signed by the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) and Liberation Tigers of Tamil
Eelam (LTTE), sources said.
The SLN authorities have already intimated to fisher folk of the area not to venture into sea within 4 km radius of the proposed training centre for
fishing, sources said. Representatives of fisheries societies in the peninsula met Friday at the
office of JDFSF and discussed in detail the danger that is to follow the
completion of the naval training centre in the Chullipuram coastal area,
sources said. Chullipuram is one of the boundaries of the Palaly high security zone and
fishermen were allowed till recently to fish in Chullipuram sea area.
