Students excelled in scholarship exam honoured in Trinco

Parents and well- wishers of the Trincomalee Sri Shanmuga Hindu Ladies College honoured 33 students who passed Year-5 Scholarship examination this year and the 3 teachers who were in charge of their education at an event held in the college hall Monday. This was the first time in the Trincomalee district more than 50 students passed in the Year 5 scholarship examination from one school, education sources said.
Trincomalee district parliamentarians Messrs R.Sampanthan and K.Thurairatnasingham were the chief guests. Earlier the three teachers who taught the Year 5 students were taken in a procession to the venue along with the chief guests led by Principal Ms Chandra Balasubramaniam with college band in attendance.

Ms Chandra Balasubramaniam said in her address that this was the first time 53 students had passed the examination from her school and one of them obtained second highest marks 175 in the district. The cut out for Trincomalee students was 125.

102 students sat for the examination and 99 obtained marks more than 100 making the total number of students gained proficiency to 99. Of the 53 qualified in the examination 27 are from families below poverty line and they are entitled to get bursary from the government, the school principal said. Mr.R.Sampanthan also spoke. Guests later handed over prizes and certificates to students excelled in the scholarship examination. Year 5 school teachers Messrs Sakunthala Vivekanandan, Jeevamalar Manoharan and Koneswari Manoharan were also honoured by parents and guests with prizes.
