The event was attended by Journalists, academics and general public. "The Government of Sri Lanka and the Sinhala media have unleased media war on the Tamil people. They should realize that Tamil people aspire, like any other people, to live freely and with dignity," said Thamilchelvan. Senior journalists M Thirunavukarasu and D Sivaram addressed the audience on different media issues and mentioned that an Institute of this type is an urgent necessity to nurture proficient journalists so that people are educated on the issues affecting them. "Journalists skilled in political and military analysis are important for the growth of any community. Besides, technology is advancing rapidly in the world that has allowed small groups to compete with media giants of the world. Tamils in NorthEast should not pass this opportunity," Sivaram said. Thamilchelvan also handed over to the Institute administrators, the special fund allocated by LTTE leader Pirapaharan for the development of the Media Institute.
