Five soldiers killed in Kilinochchi[TamilNet, Sunday, 03 May 1998, 23:59 GMT]Five Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers were killed and one wounded yesterday around 4.30 p.m. in the SLA controlled part of Kilinochchi when the Liberation Tigers activated a claymore mine, said SLA sources in Vavuniya. The tractor in which the soldiers were tavelling was damaged. Kilinnochchi town and its environs were captured by the SLA in a major offensive in late 1996 which displaced the 200,000 inhabitants. An LTTE assault on the fortified town in January this year overran the base, and parts of the it are still being held by the LTTE. Sporadic fighting occurs in and around the town.
