A police guard was placed at the entrance of the controversial United General Market in Trincomalee town last night, after the members of the Trincomalee Urban Council resolved on Thursday to stage a protest fast in front of the offices of the Northeast Provincial Council, if the opening of the market is delayed beyond a month, said sources in Trincomalee.
Another group of policemen are stationed within the market premises. A communication was despatched by the District Coordinating Officer of the area, Major General Nihal Jayakody to the Chief Secretary of the Northeast Provincial Council Mr. G Krishnarajah about reopening the market, but no other details are available, said sources.
