Hundreds of saffron-robed Buddhist Monks belonging to the
National Bhikku Front (NBF) on Wednesday launched a protest rally opposite the United Nations office in Colombo to condemn the recent statement by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan over the slaying of Head of LTTE's Political Wing in Batticaloa-Amparai district, E.Kousalyan and his team in the Sri Lanka government-controlled areas in the Eastern province.
The protesters carrying anti-UN placards were shouting anti-UN slogans and accused the world body of recognizing the activities of the "terrorists", which they said would lead to the formation of a separate state in Sri Lanka. A couple of days after the killing of Kousalyan and others, UN Secretary General issued a statement condemning the killing and urged the parties to the truce agreement to exercise maximum restraint and to strictly observe the existing agreement. Last Friday, the Patriotic National Movement (PNM) handed over a memorandum to the UN office in Colombo accusing the UN of attempting to give diplomatic recognition to LTTE.
