Canadian Tamils provide education support to Trinco villages

Socio-Economic Development Organization of Trincomalee (SEDOT) with financial help from Trincomalee Welfare Association (TWA) in Canada has embarked on a scheme to assist students and teachers in resettled Tamil villages of Thiriyai, Nochchikulam and Adambodai in the Trincomalee district to uplift the standard of education, civil sources in Trincomalee said. The scheme supports salaries to additional volunteer and pre-school teachers in the three villages.

At an event held in Trincomalee New Silver Star Hotel Saturday evening the scheme was inaugurated with Trincomalee district parliamentarian Mr.K.Thurairatnasingham as the chief guest. SEDOT President Dr.K.Sasitharan presided. First monthly payment to four volunteer and two pre-school teachers were made at the event, sources said.

TWA also donated a sum of Rs 180,000/= to a six year boy Jeyakumar Thayaparan of Alankerni for his heart surgery. In addition bicycleswere donated to four fishermen who have lost their employment because of tsunami disaster at this event.

Each volunteer teacher is paid monthly three thousand rupees. Four are working in Thiriya Tamil Maha Vidiyalayam and two in Nochchikulam Tamil School. Two pre-school teachers working in Adambodai are paid Rs 2,000/-, sources said.

TWA distributed relief supplies for the flood victimsin Eeachilampathu Age's Division and Kuchchaveli Age's Division in the Trincomalee district forRs. 422 500/= through SEDOT in midDecember 2004.

In latter part of December 2004 and early January 2005 it has distributed relief supplies for the tsunami victims in Eeachilampathu AGA's Division and Kuchchaveli AGA's Division, including Vakarai, Verugal, Eeachilampathu, Veloor, Adamapodai, Kallampathai, and Thiriyai for Rs 1, 045, 000 through SEDOT.

TWA is running a girls' orphanage at Mallikaitheivu in Muttur division, since January 2005, supporting remitting sum of Rs 100, 000/= monthly for its maintenance. It is to construct a new building for this orphanage at a cost of Rs 2,500 000. The foundation stone for this project is to take place Monday evening.

TWA is to open a new boys' orphanage in Sambaltheivu, north of Trincomalee on March 3, sources said

Currently TWA is implementing a nutrition program for students in the resettled Thiriyai village. Around 150 children are currently benefitting from this project. This project is also being implemented through SEDOT.
