LTTE Political Head meets with Director General of Italian Foreign Ministry

Exploring the framework of the Joint Mechanism draft as accepted by the LTTE, in a meeting with Mr. Claudio Pacifico, the Director General of the Italian Foreign Ministry in Rome on Friday, Political Head of the LTTE Mr. S.P. Thamilchelvan noted that the inclusive and coordinated mechanism involving International NGOs, local civilian based organizations and the district level Government officials was key to the success of the internationally praised relief operations led by the LTTE initiated Task Force after the December 26 tsunami.

Expressing sadness on the deteriorating state of health of His Holiness Pope John Paul II, the LTTE Political Head thanked the people and the Government of Italy for giving immediate assistance during post-tsunami management.

The meeting took place at the Foreign Ministry Complex in Rome.

Mr. Martini expressing condolences for those affected by the tsunami catestrophy, on behalf of the People of Italy and the Italian Government, showed keen interest in ascertaining whether the Tamil People could find a positive element in this adversity by expanding confidence building into the Peace Process, the website of the LTTE Peace Secretariat said.

Mr. Alesandro Cevese, Deputy Director General, Mr. Giuseppe Cinti and Dr. Agostine Mioxxo, Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Civil Protection Department also attended the meeting, according to the website.

The Director General for the Countries of Asia, Oceania, the Pacific and Antarctica is responsible for a total of 37 countries, and deals with all aspects of bilateral relations with these countries.

On the Indian sub-continent, together with its EU partners, Italian diplomacy has been working for some time to give the European Union a more active role in a region of growing political and economic interest. According to Italian Foreign Ministry website, the country supports the need to encourage the process of inter-Korean reconciliation as basic element in regional and global stability and security.

Italy was directly involved in the events leading to the independence of East Timor, participating in the multinational force and contributing to the institution building for the new State.
