UNESCO Friday donated a bus for the mobile library service of the Jaffna
Municipal Council at an event held at the municipal library premises.
Mr.R.P.Perera, Sri Lanka's representative of the UNESCO handed over the
keys of the bus to Dr.K.Gunarasa, Jaffna Municipal Commissioner. Three
Photostat machines were also handed over to Mr.S.Thanabalasingham, Chief
Librarian of the Municipal Library, sources said.
Jaffna Government Agent Mr.K.Ganesh, Dr.K.Gunarasa and Mr.R.P.Perera
lit the traditional oil lamp. Dr.Gunarasa presided over the event. Mr.Perera said he would take steps in consultation with
the Government of Sri Lanka to bring Naguleswaram in Kerimalai,
Thirukoneswaram and several historical places in the northeast under the
cultural heritage project of the UNESCO.
Constructing buildings and providing funds would not develop the country. The
development of the country also depends of the development of knowledge of
the people. UNESCO will work towards this aim, he said. Mr.Ganesh, Government Agent, Mr.S.Paramanathan, member of the Jaffna
Municipal Development Committee, Mr.K.C.Velautham, Jaffna Library Committee
member and Mr.S.Thanabalasingham, chief librarian also spoke.
