ADB funds housing project for war displaced Kanniya families

A ninety-unit housing project for the first group of resettled families in Kanniya, Trincomalee, implemented by Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) with financial assistance from Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded North East Community
Restoration and Development (NECORD) project was inaugurated Friday, sources said. Kanniya is a traditional Tamil village located about 8 km off north of east port
town along Trincomalee-Anuradhapura road.

morning unveiled the name board of the Housing Scheme and NECORD Deputy
Project Director Mr.N.Puhendran laid the foundation for the first house of the thirty to be constructed in Kanniya. Eighty families out of 177 displaced due to war have been resettled with the signing of the ceasefire agreement signed about three years ago, TRO sources said. TRO Trincomalee district Project officer Mr.V.Kalaivarnan presided over the event. Mr Kalaivarnan said NECORD is providing Rs 250,000 to build each house. TRO is the implementing agency to construct these houses with additional contribution of beneficiaries. Houses for the remaining sixty families will be constructed in Peeliyady and Mangayootu areas, he added. Kanniya is the first village undertaken by the NECORD in the northeast province under the rehabilitation of resettled displaced families due to
war. The success of the project solely depends on the contribution of\ resettled families in the village, said Mr.N.Puhendran. Mr.R.Umakanthan of NECORD and Mr.C.Kumarakuruparan of TRO, Trincomalee district also spoke.
