Mercy Corps assists pregnant mothers in Kinniya

Mercy Corps, an international non-governmental organization headquartered in U.S. in collaboration with the Social Service Education Development Organization (SSEDO) in Kinniya is distributing materials necessary for expectant mothers including bath basin, blanket, mosquito net, food, and soaps for 475 tsunami affected pregnant mothers and mothers with infants in nine villages in the Kinniya divisional secretariat division, civil society sources said.

Mr.Hideha Salam, Director of SSEDO, presided the first phase of the distribution recently held at the SSEDO conference hall.
Mr Thanga Subramaniam, Mercy Corps Project Officer, said the project will benefit a high risk population that has suffered from lack of proper care and nourishment. He hoped that the assistance kits would bring mothers and infants good health and happiness. Ms. Gretchen Ansorge, Mercy Corps Regional Director, presented the first kit to an expectant mother. Dr. A.H Sameem, also spoke. This is the second project Mercy Corps has collaborated with SSEDO. Earlier, Mercy Corps joined the SSEDO in establishing two sewing
training centers for young women in Kinniya division. 76 women are daily attending sewing classes in these centres, sources said.
