Sampoor court releases Sri Lanka policeman on bail

Thamileelam Court in Sampoor, Muttur east, Tuesday released Mr.Amal Prasanna, a Sri Lankan police constable on surety bail for a sum of Rs 50,000, legal sources in Trincomalee said. LTTE cadres took the suspect into custody when he trespassed into Upparu, a village under the control of LTTE in Kinniya division on June 16, sources said.

The suspect Sri Lanka policeman was working in the Chinabay Police Station at the time when he was arrested by the LTTE for entering into LTTE held territory cadres and the court ordered remand for the Mr Prasanna. He was produced in Sampoor court Tuesday around 3 p.m. The prosecution Tamil Eelam police official told Sampoor court judge that the accused SL policeman was taken into custody when he was trespassing into the LTTE held area.

Although investigation is proceeding on the exact circumstances of the incident and the court is awaiting a report, the Tamil Eelam police did not have any objection in releasing the suspect on bail, sources said. Mr.Arthur Tveiten, Head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) in Trincomalee district and Mr.Elilan, LTTE Trincomalee district political head were watching the proceedings of the case, sources said. Sampoor Judge ordered the release of the suspect SL policeman on surety bail for a sum of fifty thousand rupees. A member of the LTTE stood surety for the suspect, sources said. Later Mr.Elilan handed over the policeman to SLMM Trincomalee district head Mr.Arthur Tveiten. Mr.Arthur Tveiten said the released policeman would be handed over to his relatives later, sources said.
