De-mining awareness week in Jaffna district

De-mining Co-ordinating Unit of the Jaffna district secretariat with the funding of the UNICEF has been implementing an Awareness Week on De-mining Programme in the Jaffna district. The inaugural event took place last Monday and will conclude Sunday, sources said.

Banners and posters exhorting the people for the creation of a mine-free land are seen all over the district including vehicles and three-wheelers.

On Thursday an exhibition was held in Jaffna town in collaboration with Halo Trust, Danish De-mining Group and the De-mining Unit of the Sri Lanka Army.

In the meantime, Sarvodaya, a non-governmental organization provided livelihood assistance to about fifty beneficiaries who have lost their limbs in mine explosion.
