SLMC leader meets UN special envoy

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) said Sunday that the discussion it held with UN special envoy Mr.Lakhdar Brahimi for about an hour has given confidence that the Muslim community would also be made a party in the future peace talks between the Government of Sri Lanka and Liberation

Mr.Brahimi met with Mr.Rauff Hakim at the latter's residence Saturday morning. Later the SLMC said in a statement that the party delegation briefed the UN special envoy about current situation in the peace process. The SLMC had made it clear to the UN special envoy that the rights of Muslim people could be ensured in a final political solution based on the federal concept. Mr.Brahimi informed the SLMC delegation that the purpose of his visit to Sri Lanka, at the invitation of President Ms Chandrika Kumaratunge, was to submit a report to UN Secretary General about the current status of the peace process, the SLMC release added.
