Tamil expatriate groups in France and Germany donated nine sewing machines and four 40W Solar Home Systems (SHS) in late August costing US$4000 to Vakarai residents affected by tsunami through Trincomalee branch The Technical Consultancy House (TECH), an NGO operating in the NorthEast, TECH officials said.
German representative for the donors, Mr Victor Amalanath, was present at the ceremony to distribute the equipment. Trincomalee district Head of the LTTE Political Wing, Ms Kaaronja, Head of Political Wing of Vakarai region, Executive Director of TECH, S Suhunan, and members of the public attended the event. "We use our branch office in Trincomalee to evaluate the needs of the families and select the recipients. Donors indicated to us the region they want to help," Suhunan said of the criteria TECH uses in selecting families to donate equipments. The SHSs, also known as Photo Voltaic (PV) systems, are being increasingly deployed in Vanni, mainly through financial support from expatriate Tamils for use in community centers and schools.
