Fire at Colombo Police HQ, third floor damaged

Fire erupted at the third floor of the Police Headquarters located at Colombo Fort around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday. The third floor which houses offices of eight Deputy Inspector Generals (DIG) sustained major damages, Police said. Noone was injured as the DIGs and officials were attending a meeting in a different floor at the time of the fire, sources added.

Offices and many important documents were damaged in the fire. Fire extinquishing units of Sri Lanka Fire Brigade in Colombo and the Fire Brigade of the Sri Lankan Aire Force were engaged in extinguishing the fire, Police said. An electrical short could have ignited the fire, police said adding that an investigation would be launched by the Criminal Investigation Department of the Police.
