Residents of Kevil, a village in Vadamaradchchi east division in Jaffna
district Saturday informed the Jaffna Government that that they would
launch a sit-in-protest campaign at the Maruthankerni junction and in front
of the offices of non-governmental organizations
(NGO) in their area from September 22 if the civil authorities fail to
repair the road and provide transport facilities to the village, sources said.
"We have been walking about 3 to 4 km from our village to main road as the road which leads to our area is in a dilapidated condition and not fit for vehicular transport. About two hundred families and six hundred migrant fishermen from the south of Sri Lanka live in our village," residents said in a memorandum submitted to the
Government Agent. "Several rounds of talks had been held with the civil
authorities concerned to repair the road. Vadamaradchchi East local council (Predesiya Sabah) authorities told us that they have received about 4 million rupees to repair the road. Up to now no efforts to repair the road have been initiated. The residents are suffering without transport facilities," said the memorandum.
