Buddha statue erected in Chunnakam SLA camp

A new Buddha statue was erected, and an opening ceremony with special prayers was held Poya day, Saturday inside the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) 513 brigade camp located in Chunnakam on Kankesaturai Road, residents of the area said.

Recent controversy related to erection of Buddha statue in Trincomalee busstand evoked religious tensions in the district, and has converted Trincomalee into a virtual garrison town with hundreds of additional troops brought in for security.

Later, Sri Lanka Army soldiers of Omanthai camp north of Vavuniya built another controversial Buddha statute in Omanthai Pillaiyar temple premises causing tension among residents in Omanthai.
