Malteser International rebuilds Trincomalee Children's Home

Renovated at a cost of about 3.5 million rupees donated by the German based Malteser International (Order of Worldwide Relief), the building complex of the Trincomalee "Anbu Illam," a leading children's home sheltering children made destitute due to war was handed over to the administration of the institution Saturday. Mr.K.Thurairatnasingham, Trincomalee district parliamentarian unveiled the name-board of the renovated building complex, sources said.

Ms. Maren Paech, Co-ordinator Partner Projects-East of the Malteser International, declared open the renovated buildings by cutting the ribbon along with her Project Assistant Ms Vanessa Werner.

The implementing partner of the project is Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO).

"We have been able to carry out the administration of the institution under the guidance of TRO Trincomalee district branch thus providing all assistance and facilities to the children without any complaint," said Ms Siththithevi Pathmanathan, President of the Home Administration Committee.

At the commencement of the event children of the home and officials of the home administration received the guests. Later a meeting was held with Ms Pathmanathan, President of the home administration in the chair.

Ms Maren Paech of Malteser International said her organization would provide more aid to the institution in future, charity officials said.

Mr.Thurairatnasingham, Mr.C.Kumarakuruparan, Deputy Director of the Trincomalee district TRO, and Mr.T.Thavasilingam, Chairman of the Trincomalee District NGOs' Consortium also spoke. Ms Rajeswary Thedchchanamoorthy, Secretary of the Anbu Illam committee proposed vote of thanks.

Anbu Illam was founded in 1985 to give shelter to children who lost their parents in the war in the district. Until last year the Home was administered by an individual who was later removed from his position due to misconduct. The administration of the home was handed over to the Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) by the Trincomalee Magistrate on the recommendation of the North East Provincial Department for Child Care. Since then it is being administered by a committee appointed by the Trincomalee district administration of the TRO.
