Parties should strictly adhere to Election Laws- Sri Lanka's Polls Chief

The Commissioner of Elections has appealed for the cooperation of all political parties in the Presidential election on 17 November. Dayananda Dissanayake, explaining the arrangements for the election at a news conference held Friday issued a stern warning against vote rigging, lifting of ballot boxes, attacks on polling booths and other related violence, vowing to cancel the count at such centres.

Mr Dissanayake appealed to the political parties, the SL security forces, the media and the voters to help him conduct a free and fair election.

There are 13,327,160 eligible voters registered to participate in the election on 17 November. More than 10,000 polling stations will be set up all over Sri Lanka, including government controlled areas in the North-East.

The Commissioner explained that the SL Ministry of Defence and Returning Officials from the North-East would determine on the cluster polling stations at the border in order to facilitate the voters from the LTTE controlled areas.
