Hakim meets EU representatives, raises security issues

Leader of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) party, Rauf Hakim, held discussions with the European Union's resident representative in Sri Lanka Walter Wilton at his residence in Colombo Tuesday and has expressed his fears on the security of the minority party leaders during the forthcoming Presidential polls, party sources in Colombo said.

During the discussion Hakim said that he fears that violence during the November Presidential polls is likely to be targetted at the minorities and their leadership as many political parties in the South are engaged in chauvinist rhetoric.

He also added that his party SLMC would decide on its stance on the polls, depending on the manisfestos presented by the candidates of the main political parties.

"The SLMC will support the candidate who could address the political aspirations of the Muslim community in Sri Lanka," Hakim had told the EU delegation.

EU officials Michael Myer and Gilles Bernard were also present at the discussion.
