Kumaratunge leaves for Paris

Sri Lanka's President Ms Chandrika Kumaratunge left for Paris Saturday morning to attend the 33rd session of the UNESCO General Conference to be held on 3 October, sources in Colombo said. UNESCO website said "The world's Ministers of Education will meet during UNESCO's General Conference in October to explore practical ways to address Education for All challenges by building on positive examples from different parts of the world."
The Conference will be on "Education for All," and the member states will address teacher training, literacy and AIDS prevention education. Ms Kumaratunge is scheduled hold talks with her French counterpart Jacques Chirac during her stay, the Sri Lanka President's website said. "Minister Rantansiri Wickremanayake will act as Minister of Defence till the President’s return to the island. Ministers Mangala Samaraweera and Dinesh Gunawardane will act as Ministers of School Education and Higher Education. Deputy Ministers Dilan Perera and Lasantha Alagiyawanne will act as the Ministers of Media & Transport, while Deputy Minister D. M. Dassanayake will act as Minister of Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction," the website further said.
