Ex-TELO Member shot dead

Mr. Michael Gregory Cruz (45), a former member of the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (TELO) was shot dead by suspected the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Valaichenai town, 32 km north of Batticaloa, on Thursday around 10:00 a.m., said TELO sources.

The incident took place near the building housing the Divisional Secretariat (DS), the Multipurpose Co-operative Society (MPCS) office and the rural bank, in a part of the town that is considered a high security zone. The two attackers escaped.

His body was taken to the Valaichenai hospital.

Cruz, a former member of the TELO in Valaichenai, quit the organisation sometime ago and has been living in Trincomalee since.

He had paid a visit to Valaichenai and stayed with his relatives at the Valaichenai Paper Factory.

He had come to the Divisional Secretariat on official business when he was shot, the sources added.
