Mr.R.Sampanthan, leader of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Thursday
morning briefed the representatives of the UN agencies, international
non-governmental organizations, and the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM)
working in Trincomalee district on the reasons for holding the Tamil
National Resurgence Convention on October 22 in the east port city.
 Mr.Sampanthan
"Tamil speaking people will take this opportunity to enlighten the international community of the suffering they have undergone for more than half a century in their own homeland. The oppressive rule of the successive Governments of Sri Lanka dominated by the majority community was made possible by the unitary constitution where articles providing protection for minorities were repealed in 1972," said Mr.Sampanthan addressing them at Trincomalee Krishnadasan Memorial Hall. Mr.K.Sivapalan, human rights activist and lawyer presided. Mr.K.Thurairatnasingham, Trincomalee district parliamentarian participated
in the event. (L-R) Parliamentarians Mr.Thurairatnasingham, Mr.R.Sampanthan, and lAttorney-at-Law Mr.Sivapalan
Mr.Sampanthan, Trincomalee district parliamentarian further said that under
the current ceasefire which is still holding on the ground for three years
and eight months there has been no progress towards a negotiated solution. Furthermore, the Government of Sri Lanka has failed to create the framework for the LTTE to enter the main political stream. Further, the South prevented LTTE's participation in rehabilitation and reconstruction of the war ravaged northeast province by using the courts to declare the agreement as unconstitutional, Mr.Sampanthan said. Mr.Sampanthan appealed to foreign delegates to attend the Tamil National Resurgence Convention on Saturday and witness the collective feelings of the tamil people..
