Teacher assaults pupil

Abdul Cader Mohammed Paaseen (17), a student studying for the General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) at the Attalachenai Government School, near Akkaraipattu in the Amparai District, 60 km south of Batticaloa, had to be hospitalised after he was assaulted by a teacher in the school, said sources in Batticaloa.

The school teacher, A. L. Anwer, had kicked and beaten the boy, reportedly, over a private matter. The boy was later admitted to Akkaraipattu General Hospital with bruises, aches and a difficulty passing urine.

The Akkaraipattu Police which is conducting inquiries, has taken the Principal and the Deputy Principal of the school and the teacher involved in the assault, for questioning.

Meanwhile, the students of the school registered their protest over the incident by boycotting classes, distributing pamphlets and putting up posters condemning it.
